The anthem opens with a turbulent fanfare; the church as ark is surrounded by "hungry billows" and "poisoned arrows"; the fanfare returns as the Lord defends the church; a soaring descant climaxes on "the day when hell itself appalls us," and leads to a quiet vision of peace.
