Hopson effectively combines two hymntunes to create this stirring setting, taken from his larger work, Tenebrae: A Service of Darkness. The rich fullness of Rockingham moves into a stark setting of Hamburg for the third verse of the text, scored for women's voices intertwined with "O Sacred Head Now Wounded" in a haunting oboe solo.
